Abstract

Three threshold models, in which the response variable is related to regression variables with fixed coefficients as well as random components, are fitted to ordinal data. Estimation procedures are based on the use of penalized likelihood methods to provide the initial computations for both approximate maximum likelihood and residual maximum likelihood methods. Procedures are applied to a problem arising in the testing of dairy products.
