Bibliographical note
Funding Information:The drive to reduce transfusions in surgery has been supported by technical developments leading to reduced tissue trauma and reduced blood loss in surgery, in part through the use of minimally invasive surgery. The medical advantages of restrictive transfusion have been reinforced by the simple economic arguments made by the very substantial savings for hospitals as blood demand has fallen (Butcher & Richards, 2018).
