Abstract

The laser classification system provides guidance to users on the degree of laser radiation that is accessible when a laser product is in use and, from guidance, the control measures that are required to use the product safely. The classification system has evolved over forty years as new laser applications have developed. Class 1C has been proposed to address the classification of specific laser products intended for use on people. The rationale, potential limitations and possible extensions to this new class are discussed.
