Abstract
Information about the hearing in very old persons, 80 years and above, is scarce. This group, the 'oldest old', is increasing in number and demands special attention and considerable care from society. For this reason a study was initiated to collect data on different aspects of hearing in very old persons. The study is a compilation of results from three countries belonging to the European Union: Sweden (Goteborg), Denmark (Copenhagen) and Great Britain (south Wales). There were noticeable differences in pure tone thresholds between the regions. Prevalence of self-reported hearing problems also differed to some extent. The best hearing was reported from Sweden, followed by Denmark and south Wales.
