    Abstract

Liver disease is becoming a major public health problem in the UK. Increasing numbers of premature deaths from liver disease, with the average age of death at 59 years, paints a rather grim picture. This article reviews how the underlying principles of public health can help nurses to develop the necessary knowledge, understanding, and skills to tackle this challenging issue. This article is the first in a series of three articles that will consider how public health can positively influence liver disease.
