N2 - This is a shorter version of guidelines derived from the European Project on »Standardization of the management of occupational exposure to HIV/blood-borne infections and evaluation of post-exposure prophylaxis in Europe«. Representatives from nine European countries including Croatia are involved in the Project. Regarding our own experience in the management of occupational exposures in health care workers, the EuroPEP Study Group has formulated these recommendations as a framework for future management of occupational exposures to HIV-infection in health care workers. The recommendations include definition of basic terms; recommendations on exposure reports; stratification of exposures based on the type of exposure, the type of body fluid or material involved, and source patient's evaluation; recommendations on indication, type and duration for postexposure prophylaxis; and outlines several special circumstances, e.g., delayed exposure report, unknown source patient, pregnancy in the exposed person, resistance to of the source virus to antiretroviral agents, or toxicity of the PEP regimen, when consultation with local and/or national experts is advised. Since Croatian experts also participated in this Study Group, these recommendations are proposed as Croatian guidelines for post-exposure prophylaxis of HIV-infection in health care workers.
