Abstract
The safety of the blood supply relies on donor selection criteria, manufacturing processes and donation testing. Donation testing includes ABO and Rh typing to ensure donations are matched appropriately with a recipient and testing for infections to reduce the risk of transfusion-transmitted infections. This chapter describes donation testing and actions taken when a donor is found to have markers of infection. The recommendations of the recent United Kingdom Infected Blood Inquiry are also reviewed.
