    Abstract

The nuclear fuel reprocessing facility operated by British Nuclear Fuels at Sellafield (formerly Windscale) in West Cumbria in Northern England has discharged plutonium and americium into the Irish Sea through controlled releases. Molten N-methyl-morpholine-N-oxide has been investigated for ability to extract plutonium and americium from estuarine silts contaminated by anthropogenic activities.
