Damp and Mould: understanding and addressing the health risks for rented housing providers

Impact: Quality of life impacts, Health impacts, Social impacts

Description of impact

Impacts delivered and anticipated
By identifying the burden of disease from damp and mould, and using it within the
consolidated guidance for landlords, this work highlights the importance of good
indoor air quality and may help reduce the burden of disease. Since the guidance is
aimed at social and private rented housing providers, it may act to reduce health
inequalities associated with damp and mould exposure in the home. These dwellings
are more likely to be occupied by population groups of lower socio-economic status,
or with underlying health conditions and therefore susceptible to negative health
effects associated with damp and mould, who rely on landlords to fix reported issues.
The associated publication (Clark et al., 2023) found that ethnic and minority and
disadvantaged groups were disproportionately impacted by damp and mould,
reflecting a persistent environmental health inequity.
